Katie Connolly

Speaker. Teacher. Healer

Welcome to gloWithin!

Thank you for stopping by! My specialty is empowering highly sensitive and neurodiverse families and individuals as a Somatic Coach and Counsellor.

Somatic work has intrinsically been a part of my work as long as I can remember. In fact, this began over 30 years ago experimenting with breath, yoga, and noticing sensations as a child. Since then I have explored this work professionally, working with all ages in a variety of settings.

I draw upon my strong knowledge of the body, the nervous system, and trauma sensitive approaches, bridging science and intuition. I believe we are whole beings with innate gifts... and sometimes we just need the guidance of someone else who can see our light to remind us.

As a Somatic Coach my purpose is to help you connect with your whole, authentic self, so you can gloWithin!

What is Somatic Work, Therapy, or Coaching?

"Soma" is Greek for body, and so Somatic Therapy is body-based therapy. Lately this has become a bit of a buzz word, and for good reason, as so many are disconnected from their bodies due to lifestyle, demands, an overstimulated society, and trauma. I have also been here and at one point was so disconnected from my body, because it didn't feel like a safe place to be. While our experiences are unique, it is connection that allows us to heal and grow. But I suspect you are here because you recognize this, and are looking to create positive change in your life!

When I was a child my wise mother gave me the gift of breath and meditation, and often asked me "what is your body saying?" Around the age of 7 I began playing with yoga forms, and noticed that they released tension or brought up sensation and emotion in different areas of my body. This is the basis of Somatic work, therapy or coaching - the integration of our experiences from physiological, emotional, cognitive, and energetic perspectives. Essentially Somatic Therapy is a holistic practice, however; everyone practices it differently... so it's good to ask.

What do I do as a Somatic Coach?

As this is and always has been integral to my work, I incorporate somatic coaching into all I do, from my online courses, to Craniosacral & Yoga, to Clinical Counselling and Speaking. As I mentioned above, we live in a disconnected society - from ourselves and each other. I support clients to develop greater awareness around their body sensations, how this informs their emotions, thought patterns, subsequent behaviours, and beyond. This helps you to tune into your body wisdom, release patterns no longer serving, and create greater alignment in your life.

How I practice it differs depending on the client, their age, their learning and sensing type, and what modalities we are working with. Ultimately my purpose is to guide you back into connection with your body, so you can experience greater health, peace, love, joy, and gloWithin!

Why did I become a Somatic Coach?

As a you might have guessed, this was my therapy to heal. I was gifted it as a child and intuitively used it to heal youth experiences after my near death experience at 21. You are welcome to read a bit about my journey if you scroll to the bottom of this page. While each of our journeys are unique, this journey has taught me a great deal of compassion.

About Katie

I'm a highly sensitive person with ADHD tendencies and was highly attuned to the energy states around me as a child. I was never diagnosed with ADHD but it's pretty clear to everyone who knows me well (and my ADHD family), that this is part of my make-up. In order to support me, my wise mother gave me the gift of breathwork and meditation at a young age, which she learned from my Nana. Going through my Gran's yoga books around 7 years after family dinners, I discovered by moving my body in different forms it helped to bring up and release emotion or sensation - the basis of Somatic work.

Having these tools from a young age helped me to be resilient and stay aligned with my intuition. I have always a strong spiritual practice and understand this through quantum physics or energy. Interestingly, my incredible maternal grandfather was taken in by Schrödinger (pioneer in quantum theory) as a refugee from Austria, and illustrated many of his books while pursuing his engineering degree.

My nature as a healer left me very open to trying to fix situations and allow others to cross my boundaries. I started to become disconnected from my body around the age of 10, presenting as anxiety and body dysmorphia. All this changed at 21, when I had a life-changing near death experience and begged to come back into my body. This moment opened the door to healing and reconnected me to my meditation practice, and my life purpose I recognized as a child - to bring greater peace, love, and joy to the world. Not being able to find a therapist since I was 19 whom I resonated with, I worked with the practices I learned as a child, including incorporating my passion for arts and movement (expressive therapy).

As a teen I recognized our lifestyles were not conducive to thriving families, which inspired me to create Studio 202, a healing community space in North Vancouver. In 2020 I closed this space due to world events and as it was the source of my postpartum anxiety with my eldest. After completing a challenging contract as an Executive Director (which led to a third burnout), I realized I needed to focus on my passions again and brought my offerings online, founding gloWithin!

Miraculously, we had our youngest during this time but do to lack of sleep for a year, I struggled with a very humbling postpartum depression. For a few months all I could do was meditate. This is what prompted me to pursue my Masters in Counselling, 12 years after first considering it.

I am telling you this because while our situations are unique, with connection and the right support we can heal and create greater alignment in our lives for peace within, and lead our children by example. As a society, we have largely been taught to over-ride our intuition, or perhaps experienced trauma disconnecting us from our innate gifts. I believe this is in part why we are seeing such high rates of anxiety, depression, and burn out.

Children are naturally connected to their intuition, and as conscious parents we strive to honour this as we guide them on their journey… but are we honouring this in ourselves?

I believe as parents that we know what is right for our child and try our best each and every day. I also understand the challenges and gifts of being a Highly Sensitive parent (and introvert), and specialize in working with highly sensitive and neurodiverse families through a very holistic model. My role is to support you in understanding the environments in which you exist and to create supportive ones to sustainably nourish you, allowing you to tap into your intuitive wisdom and lead your family by example.

While I am passionate about my work, I nourish myself through my nearly lifelong meditation practice, being active in nature, expressing myself creatively, going on adventures, and spending time with those I love.

I look forward to connecting with you on this journey!
